Han öppnade med ett stort leende och rå äggula i skägget. Välkomnade in i lägenheten som bestod av en gigantisk prissamling, obäddad säng och vikter till träningsbänken. Och jag föll pladask. Johnny var något alldeles speciellt. Inte bara den starkaste människan jag någonsin har träffat, utan mer. 

 

 

Vi blev bjudna på lunch. Löskokta ägg och bananer. Johnny berättade att han ofta blev portad från landets bufféer. Han åt för mycket. 

- Jag är bufféernas skräck...

 

Det bullrande skrattet när Johnny skrockade om restuarangägare som inte kunde hantera hans dagliga intag på 7000 kalorier. Hans blick in i kameran när han konstaterade att han var tyngdlyftningens svar på Zlatan. Men samtidigt erkände att han inte var lika bra med bollen och gärna bytte med Zlatan för en dag...

 

Jag själv har aldrig tagit 50 kilo i bänkpress. Alla mina muskler sitter i benen...Johnny, med sina 18 SM-guld i styrkelyft, hade personbästa på 346 kilo i bänkpress, 415 kilo i knäböj och 335 kilo i marklyft. Jag minns de där siffrorna än idag, över två år senare, då jag pluggade styrkelyft flera dagar innan vi skulle träffa honom för inspelningen. Johnny var en av fem svenska mästare vi skulle lära oss något från inför 2014-års Poker-SM. 

 

Han var stark redan som liten. Sa att han skulle bli starkast i världen där han gick runt och bar cementsäckar i Simrishamn. Folk försökte förklara att han var tvungen att vara lite realistisk med sina mål. 

- Men det var ju det jag var...

 

Johnny Wahlqvist tog både VM- och EM-guld. Och blev starkast i världen. Han gjorde det genom att göra på sitt sätt. Inte lyssna på vad alla andra sa åt honom att göra. Johnny var obekväm. Han var egen. 

 

Fan, vad jag älskar såna människor. 

 

Vi var så otroligt olika, men ändå kunde jag känna igen mig i Johnnys liv. Styrkelyftning och pokerspelande är inte så olikt ändå. Många förstår inte vad farao vi håller på med. Ägna ett helt liv åt det där? 

 

 

Livet hade inte varit lätt. Han hade länge slagits mot orättvisor. Mot myndigheter och till och med sitt eget förbund. Nu bodde han i en liten etta i Simrishamn. Tränade i vardagsrummet och i en källare under en skola. Han hade inte blivit rik på sitt livsval, eller som han själv sa "livet är inte bara en dans på rosor, det är rosor med."

 

Men han var den starkaste jag någonsin har träffat. När han såg på sin bokhylla överfull av medaljer så glänste något i blicken. Han var nöjd. Han hade valt rätt. Och han hade gjort det på sitt sätt. 

- Varje medalj är en del av mig, ett minne, en plats. 

 

Vi pratar ofta om vilka fantastiska människor vi träffar vid pokerborden och att det är det bästa med att spela poker. Det är lätt att glorifiera den biten, jag har gjort det många gånger. För att vara ärlig, man träffar på en del lågvattenmärken med. Och jag vet inte om pokerspelare generellt är så himla speciella. Som på alla ställen i livet kan man träffa en klick som är fantastiska och som man håller fast vid. Pokerborden speglar nog mest det naturliga urvalet av mänskligheten. 

 

Men den där klicken är så värd att vänta på. Låt mig träffa 99 rötägg, om den hundrade är en unik varelse som kommer att bli ett varmt minne för resten av livet. 

 

Den 30 januari 2017 blev Johnny Wahlqvists sista dag. 43 år gammal. På sjukhuset i Ystad slutade hans hjärta att slå. Vi träffades bara en gång, men jädrar vilken gång det var!
